El hanahaki es una enfermedad que se presenta por el amor no correspondido. A la persona que la sufre empiezan a crecerle flores por dentro y que poco a poco le van asfixiando, haciendo que tosa los petalos (que pueden incluso volverse flores enteras), vomite o, que si no se cura, puede ocasionar hasta la muerte.

Las formas de curar el hanahaki pueden variar, en algunos casos se toma que es confesar los sentimientos, otras que el amor debe ser correspondido o incluso existe la posibilidad de operar para remover las flores pero, si se hace eso, todos los sentimientos que se sentía por el ser amado desaparecen junto con las flores; y eso cuando la operación es exitosa, porque existe la posibilidad de que falle o que incluso las flores vuelvan a crecer con el tiempo
